I : About Cukurova
Kimya End. A.S.
Cukurova Kimya Endustrisi A.S. is located in an Industrial Zone in Manisa, a city 40 km inland from Turkey’s second largest port, Izmir. The location
is 56 km
to the airport and is on the main Izmir-Istanbul highway. The
companies’ plants are placed in an area of 103.000 m² and covers roughly 60 % of this area.
CKE is owned by
one of Turkey’s
largest group, the Cukurova Holding, which
currently controls wholly or in part, 138 companies.
CKE was
established back in 1974. The initial objectives were to produce foundry
resins for the foundry industry. As the most popular resin type at that
time was Furan Resins, CKE had plants to produce Furfural from olive
press cake, Furfuryl Alcohol from Furfural and
Furan resins from Furfuryl Alcohol.
The company
started producing, Phenol-formaldehyde and Furan resins binders and
relevant catalysts in 1976, under license from Fordath
of Britain which does not exist any more. CKE had a Furfural production
capacity of 1800 T/year, Furfuryl Alcohol
capacity of 1650 T/year and resin production capacity of nearly 3000
T/year. At the time she was the only company which produced Furfural, Furfuryl Alcohol and foundry resins in Turkey.
In time CKE added
mould and core coatings and Tundish Linings to
her product range.
As new binder
technologies emerged in the foundry resins market, CKE signed another
License agreement with the then Borden Chemical (UK) Ltd (currently Hexion Specialty Chemicals) to produce ester cured
Alkaline Phenolic Resins, at the end of 1989. In the
meantime the company decided to stop production of Furfural due to
economic reason in 1990 and the Furfural plant was closed down. Furfuryl Alcohol production, however, was continued
using imported Furfural. At the same time, the company also intensified
her efforts to develop her own technology. Thus, by 1991 CKE started
producing exothermic and insulating Feeder Sleeves. Both production and
sales of Alkaline Phenolic Resins and Feeder sleeves proved to be great
successes and CKE further intensified her research and development
activities. So work commenced to develop Industrial Phenolic Resin
Technology in 1993.
In 1994, CKE entered into a joint venture with Daussan Group of France. As a result a joint
venture company, Daussan-Cukurova Kimya A.S. was established and products such as
Silica and magnesite based Tundish Linings and
gunning mixes etc., mainly products for steel industries were then
produced and marketed by the new company.
As another result
of her own development efforts, CKE started production and sales of heat
insulation boards for domestic heat appliances and industrial heaters by
the end of 1995.
In the year 1996,
CKE and then Borden Chemical (UK) Ltd. (presently Hexion
Specialty Chemicals) signed a new license agreement covering transfer of
technology and know-how of a whole range of foundry resins, a whole range
of industrial phenolic resins (novolaks) and core and mould coatings with the
impetus of new products stemming from both technology transfer and home
development efforts, the company enjoyed a steady and healty
growth. In 2001, due to economic reasons the Furfuryl
Alcohol production was stopped and Furan resin production has been
carried out by imported Furfuryl Alcohol ever
since. Home developed industrial resin range expanded and currently
solid, powder and liquid industrial resins (both resoles and novolaks) are supplied for the production of friction
materials, abrasives, refractory bricks, insulation materials, automotive
felts etc.
A new license
agreement on Alkaline Phenolic resin Technology was signed with Hexion Specialty Chemicals in 2006. At the present
time Cukurova Kimya’s
main product lines can be summarized as follows;
1-
Foundry Resins and Catalysts
2-
Industrial Phenolic Resins
3-
Feeder Sleeves
4-
Core and Mould Coatings
5-
Industrial Heat Insulation Boards
6-
Coated Sands
7-
Auxiliary Material for the Foundry Industry
CKE is the market
leader in Turkey
in nearly all of the product categories
indicated above. Within the last ten years the company’s production
and sales in volume has grown, on the average, by about 350 % and the
revenue in USD has increased nearly by 300 %.
In line with the
above growth, the labor force has grown by
about 150 % throughout the above time interval. As new plants are being
installed to increase production capacity, far greater emphasis is given
to automation. Recently new investment is being made to replace old
equipment and plants by new and highly automated plants and equipment.
Thus products of the company have reached an undisputable level of
quality in the market. As experienced staffs are encouraged to stay, even
after retirement the company enjoys the services of highly qualified
staff with many years long experience in their branches.
CKE has also
started exporting her products. Currently varying quantities of various
products are exported to England,
France, Germany, Italy,
Sweden, Bulgaria, Romania,
Serbia, Greece, The Ukraine, Azerbaijan, Georgia,
Syria, Iran, Jordan,
Pakistan, and Israel.
Our Company has been registered with the NQA of Britain for ISO
9000–2000 certificate and also signed the Responsible Care
declaration with the Turkish Chemical Manufacturers Association.
